Getting Ready for Your Newborn Photoshoot with Hamilton newborn photographer Briar.

Becoming a parent is one of the most exciting and overwhelming experiences all at once. The early days are filled with so many new feelings, and for many new parents, the thought of leaving the house can seem impossible. But there’s something incredibly special about getting yourself up, dressed, and out the door to experience your family’s very first photo shoot together. It’s a moment that captures not just the beginning of your family’s journey, but also the raw beauty of those first days, newborn softness and tiny hands.
Preparing for that photo shoot doesn’t have to add to the stress. In fact, with a little planning, you can make it a truly special experience that’s both memorable and fun for everyone. If you’re feeling anxious or unsure about how to approach it, don’t worry – there are a few simple steps you can take to ease your mind and make the day go smoothly.
Start with a bath for baby
Starting the prep for your photo shoot with a relaxing bath or shower for your baby is a wonderful way to help them unwind and get a little extra tired before the session. Babies love the soothing feel of warm water, and a gentle kick around in the tub is the perfect way to help them feel calm and cozy. This time also offers a special opportunity for bonding. Whether it’s mum or dad, getting in the moment with your baby in the bath can create beautiful memories, making the whole experience feel even more meaningful.
If Dad wants to take the lead and give Baby a bath, it also gives mum a chance to step away for a moment. She can enjoy a quiet shower, perhaps washing away the stress of those late-night feeds, and take a few minutes to herself. It’s a small but valuable self-care ritual before diving into the day’s busy events. And when it’s all done, both baby and parent will feel refreshed and ready for the photo shoot, with a calmer, sleepier baby in tow.
Feeding Before the Session
If you’re getting newborn photos done in those early days (typically 5-14 days old), it’s important to time feeding well to help ensure a sleepy, curly baby for the session. A good tip is to aim to feed your baby about 30 minutes before arriving at the studio. This will allow your little one to settle into a natural sleep cycle, making the session go smoothly. Additionally, bring a little top-up of milk to give baby as soon as you arrive at the studio, in case they need it. This extra feed helps ensure baby is full and content, and it will allow any gas to settle before the session begins.
Another helpful tip is to keep your baby awake for 40-60 minutes before the session, if possible. A bath time or a little playtime can help keep them alert, ensuring they’ll be nice and sleepy once the photo session starts. This extra time of gentle wakefulness helps get them into the perfect sleep cycle for their photos.
Outfits: Let Your Photographer Help
When it comes to outfits for your photo shoot, one thing that can make life easier is taking advantage of the client wardrobe options that many photographers offer. As a photographer myself, I know how important it is to feel comfortable and beautiful in your outfit, which is why I provide a range of stunning dresses for mums to wear during their session. These dresses are designed to be flattering, elegant, and perfect for creating those timeless photos you’ll cherish forever.
If you’re unsure about what to wear, ask your photographer if they offer a client wardrobe. It’s one less thing to worry about on the day. For dads, it’s simple! A plain tee is all you need, and you’ll look effortlessly great in the photos. As for your little one, photography studios typically have a collection of wraps, knitted outfits, and adorable props to make your baby look even more precious. This means you can focus on enjoying the experience without stressing over finding the perfect outfit for everyone.
Pack Your Baby Bag with Essentials
Preparing your baby bag is just as important as packing for the hospital. Make sure to bring a variety of essentials. SNACKS, nappies, wipes, and comfortable clothes for after the shoot. If your little one has a big brother or sister, consider packing a coloring book or small toys to keep them entertained. I always like to start the session with sibling and family photos, so once those are done, a family member or friend can either pick up the older kids, or Dad can take them to the park.
Children can get a little bored while waiting for their younger sibling to be photographed, so if you have the option to have someone take them home afterward, it can really help ease the stress in the studio. This gives mum a chance to relax and focus on feeding the baby when needed. But don’t worry, if this isn’t possible, older siblings are always more than welcome to stay in the studio. Just be sure to bring plenty of snacks for them, after all, a happy kid is a well fed kid! Keeping them fueled and entertained will help the whole experience go more smoothly.
Remember, energy is key in the studio. A calm mum makes for a calm baby, so the more you can relax and enjoy the moment, the more your little one will too.
Consider the Dummy for Soothing (If It Works for You)
I understand that not everyone is a fan of using a dummy and some parents may not have introduced one to their baby yet or maybe it’s just not something you want to offer. However, for your photo session, if you have a baby who likes to suck for comfort, a dummy can be a helpful tool. It’s not just about soothing your little one during the shoot, but also about making sure they’re calm and content while we capture those precious moments.
If you do decide to bring one, just keep it nearby for when your baby needs a little extra comfort This can help prevent any fussy moments during the session and allow you to stay relaxed and focused on the photos. And remember, there’s no right or wrong approach, it’s all about what works best for you and your baby to make the experience enjoyable.
Keep the Mood Light and Fun
Family & newborn photo shoots are about capturing the essence of you and your loved ones. While the goal is to create beautiful, timeless images, it’s just as important that the experience is enjoyable. If there’s something meaningful to you or your family, whether it’s a favorite blanket, a cherished keepsake, or a toy, bring it along! These personal touches can make your photos even more special and unique to your family.
But the fun doesn’t stop there! If there’s something your family loves doing together, whether it’s playing a silly game, telling jokes, or even having a little dance party, bring that energy into the session. The more natural and relaxed you feel, the better your photos will turn out. Don’t be afraid to let loose and have fun.
If your baby is in a great mood, but your toddler just wants to run around and play, let them! A great photographer will know how to capture those moments of joy and energy, working with the vibe of the session. Sometimes, the most magical photos happen when everyone is just being themselves, having fun together. So, embrace the moment, enjoy the experience, and let your photographer capture the love and happiness that make your family truly unique.
Preparing for your family photo shoot may feel like a lot of work, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. A little preparation and a relaxed attitude go a long way in ensuring that the session is enjoyable and stress free for everyone. Take a deep breath, trust your photographer, and focus on creating memories with your loved ones. These photos will be cherished for years to come…
Because a photo lasts a lifetime but they are only this small once.
